History

The Motspur Park gas holders were built on what was once Motspur Farm in the historic Parish of Malden. However, as the railway line was built without a cattle arch, the farm was split in two and the portion to the east became part of Malden Green Farm. The farm house and green are still by Worcester Park station.

Malden Green Farm would later be used as the Wimbledon Shooting Grounds, and later still the Albermarle Shooting Grounds, run by Edgar Little (see below). In 1924 the first gas holder was built. At the time this was known as the Worcester Park Gas Holder, as this was the nearest identifiable place and Motspur Park’s station and neighbourhoods were yet to be built.

The second gas holder was built in 1932 and the third in 1954. By 1939 most of Malden Green Farm had become the Station Estate.

With time the holders would become more associated with Motspur Park, although gas holders aficionados still refer to the official Worcester Park name. They became redundant by 2007.
