Our convoluted planning system is made up of multiple planning policies. Some of the more important documents are listed below. It is good practice to quote these documents when objecting or commenting on planning applications.

National Planning Policy Framework
The National Planning Policy Framework was revised on 12 December 2024 and sets out the government’s planning policies for England and how these are expected to be applied.
Planning Practice Guidance
These are statements on certain aspects of the planning framework eg Metropolitan Open Land
The London Plan 2021
The London Plan 2021 is the Spatial Development Strategy for Greater London. It sets out a framework for how London will develop over the next 20-25 years. The policies in the Plan should inform decisions on planning applications across the capital. Borough’s Local Plans must be in ‘general conformity’ with the London Plan. As Kingston’s Plan is out of date, the London Plan takes on increased importance.
Kingston Local Plan 2012
Local Plans are supposed to be updated every 5-10 years, however, Kingston’s new Local Plan is not expected to be adopted until 2027.
